WordsAhead insists on a clear-headed approach:
- E = English Language
- C = Consonant Sounds, with fairly consistent letter representations
- V = Vowel Sounds, with numerous and odd letter representations
E = C + V
E – C = V
Bloom’s Taxonomy is applied as follows:
If KNOWLEDGE provides a necessary foundation for...
Comprehension –> Application –> Analysis –> Synthesis –> Evaluation
Then
SOUNDS/SPELLINGS will provide a necessary foundation for...
Words –> Sentences –> Paragraphs –> Literature
To identify the smallest components of speech, WordsAhead will use
number-coded vowel and consonant sounds.
(Note: Speech therapists will use more sophisticated terms including
"voiceless bilabial plosive" "fricative" "palatal
approximate" etc. and classroom teachers will use conventional
terms including "long" "short" "hard"
"soft" etc.)
Try this innovative proposal! Allow students to use WA Speech Sounds
Chart during their spelling test.
Step 1: Speech Sounds... HEARD and SAID
Speech sounds are primal, and are more important than AaBbCc’s. Sound-segmentation will lead to improved AUDITORY word-memory. One’s ability to pronounce speech sounds directly relates to one’s ability to spell.Learners must acquire automatic recognition of 39 spoken phonemes. Teach Vowel Sounds #1-15 (one per syllable) and Consonant Sounds #16-39.
Step 2: Speech Sounds... SPELLED and READ
Letters represent speech sounds. Letters spell sounds. Letter-segmentation leads to improved VISUAL word-memory. Learners must acquire automatic recognition of 52 alphabetic graphemes.
Alphabet letters include Aa through Zz.
Remember: In daily communication we use a wide variety of SPOKEN articulations and PRINTED font designs.
Make LANGUAGE MASTERY your goal... one word at a time.
Quality and quantity of information will yield comparable growth, so learners will need an unrelenting discipline in word study. Forethought. Readiness.
No skipping. No guessing.
If you deliver random or erroneous instruction, learners may need remediation to LEARN-to-read. If you deliver direct and correct instruction, learners may quickly be ready to READ-to-learn. Best success to you and yours!
