HOMEROOM<\/strong><\/a> reports that almost 5 million students in the U.S. are English learners (9%). \u00a0Spanish-speaking students might enjoy this language lesson during the holiday season.<\/p>\n

\u2018Twas the night before Christmas and all through the casa (home)<\/b>,<\/p>\n

Not a creature was stirring \u2013<\/p>\n

Caramba!\u00a0 <\/span>(Damn it!)\u00a0 <\/span>Que pasa? (What up?)<\/b><\/p>\n

Los ninos (the children)<\/b> were tucked away in their camas (beds)<\/b>,<\/p>\n

Some in long underwear, some in pajamas.<\/p>\n

While hanging the stocking with mucho cuidado (great care)<\/b><\/p>\n

in hopes that old Santa would feel obligado (obligated)<\/b><\/p>\n

to bring all children, both buenos (good)<\/b> and malos (bad)<\/b>,<\/p>\n

A nice batch of dulces (sweets) <\/b>and other regalos (gifts)<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Outside in the yard there arose such a grito (shout)<\/b><\/p>\n

That I jumped to my feet like a frightened cabrito (kid)<\/b>.<\/p>\n

I ran to the window and looked afuera (out)<\/b>,<\/p>\n

And who in the world do you think that era (it was)<\/b>?<\/p>\n

Saint Nick in a sleigh and a big red sombrero (hat)<\/b><\/p>\n

Came dashing along like a crazy bombero (firefighter)<\/b>.<\/p>\n

And pulling his sleigh, instead of venados (deer)<\/b>,<\/p>\n

Were eight little burros (donkeys)<\/b> approaching volados (by flying)<\/b>.<\/p>\n

I watched as they came and this quaint little hombre (man)<\/b><\/p>\n

Was shouting and whistling and calling by nombre (name:<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cAy (Oh) Pancho, ay Pepe, ay Cuco, ay Berto,<\/b><\/p>\n

Ay Chato, ay Chopo, Macuco, y Nieto!\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Then standing erect with hands on his pecho (chest)<\/b><\/p>\n

He flew to the top of our very own techo (ceiling).<\/b><\/p>\n

With his round little belly like a bowl of jalea (jelly)<\/b>,<\/p>\n

He struggled to squeeze down our old chimenea (chimney)<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Then huffing and puffing, at last in our sala (room)<\/b>,<\/p>\n

With soot smeared all over his red suit de gala (party clothes)<\/b>,<\/p>\n

He filled all the stockings with lovely regalos (gifts) \u2013<\/b><\/p>\n

For none of the ninos (chidren)<\/b> had been very malos (bad)<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Then chuckling aloud, seeming very contento (happy)<\/b>,<\/p>\n

He turned like a flash and was gone like the viento (wind)<\/b>.<\/p>\n

And I heard him exclaim, and this is veridad (true),<\/b><\/p>\n

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND FELIZ NAVIDAD!<\/b><\/p>\n
