computer or downloads required)&#8230; all ready to go&#8230; sold at Costco in 2011 for $29.99.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Was this a bargain for the parents who bought it or not? \u00a0Advertising and actual contents don\u2019t always match. \u00a0My analysis yields both \u201cthumbs-up&#8221; and &#8220;thumbs-down\u201d as follows:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p><b>HEAR THE PAGE<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Thumbs up for these read-alouds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p><b>HEAR THE WORD<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Thumbs up for vocabulary pronunciations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p><b>SOUND-OUT THE WORD<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Thumbs\u00a0<i>waaaaay<\/i>\u00a0down for explicit sound-parsing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p><b>SPELL THE WORD<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Thumbs down for sound-letter correspondences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p><b>LOOK AND FIND<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Thumbs up for this game technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p><b>WORD PLAY<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; \u00a0Thumbs up for learning fun.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p><b>HEAR THE MUSIC<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Thumbs up for music, always.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p><b>SING ALONG<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Thumbs\u00a0<i>waaaaay<\/i>\u00a0up, if kids will actually sing along.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p4\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p>Remember: \u00a0Good orange juice can\u2019t come from bad oranges.<\/p>\n<p>This product may seem a great value, costing the price of one family meal in a cheap restaurant, but if it provides misinformation resulting in mental confusion, you may be<i>\u00a0actually\u00a0<\/i>setting yourself up for later remediation costs. \u00a0Here are my complaints:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p>1)\u00a0 This program\u2019s \u201cSound-out the word\u201d feature has the status-quo bias towards visual input (ABCs) rather than auditory input (speech sounds), which includes several errors. \u00a0For starters, children don\u2019t HEAR letters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p>2)\u00a0 This program creates letter-sound ambiguity, but a simple remedy (as shown in **new instructions**) is to say the word \u201cLetter&#8221; before each letter name. \u00a0Example: \u00a0Letter \/I\/. \u00a0There can be no confusion about sound-alike concepts: \u00a0\/I\/-<i>eye;<\/i>\u00a0\/O\/-<i>oh;<\/i>\u00a0\/P\/-<i>pea;<\/i>\u00a0\/T\/-<i>tea;\u00a0<\/i>and \/U\/-<i>you;<\/i>\u00a0etc.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p>3)\u00a0 This program distorts the pronunciation of all consonants by adding \u201c\u2013uhh\u201d to the basic sound, as in \u2018puhh\u2019 &#8211; \u2018buhh\u2019 &#8211; \u2018tuhh\u2019 &#8211; \u2018duhh\u2019 &#8211; \u2018chuhh\u2019 &#8211; \u2018juhh\u2019 &#8211; \u2018cuhh\u2019 &#8211; \u2018guhh\u2019 &#8211; etc.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p>4)\u00a0 This program uses a Letters-to-Sounds approach, defaulting to conventional phonics names for vowel sound-units:\u00a0 Short Vowel-A or Short-A Sound [V01]\u00a0<i>animal<\/i>; Long Vowel-A or Long-A Sound [V06]\u00a0<i>ace<\/i>; Soft-C [C28]\u00a0<i>city<\/i>; Hard-C [C22]\u00a0<i>cat<\/i>; Soft-G [C21]\u00a0<i>giraffe<\/i>; Hard-G [C23]\u00a0<i>goose<\/i>, etc.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p>5)\u00a0 This program fails to make a proper distinction between [V09]\u00a0<i>juice\/glue<\/i>\u00a0and [C39+V09]\u00a0<i>cube\/use\/uniform<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p>6) \u00a0This program wrongly calls the following sounds \u201cblends\u201d:\u00a0 \/sh\/<i>shirt<\/i>, \/ch\/<i>chin<\/i>, \/th\/<i>these<\/i>,\u00a0<i>theater<\/i>; \/wh\/<i>who<\/i>, etc.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"p3\">\n<p>When you take a deeper look at relevant instructions for each of this program&#8217;s six activity books (shown below), it is questionable whether the READY TO READ product is meritorious.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div
